Comeback Medvedev Claims First Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's 21 championships have been achieved on hardcourt

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his maiden title for over two years with a win over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open title decider.

The athlete, a former number one, has had a challenging year, achieving just one match at the Grand Slams and suffering a difficult moment at the American major.

His varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his service game in particular - caused him dropping out of the top ten and eventually splitting with former mentor his previous coach.

Now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Corentin Moutet.

It is Medvedev's initial championship since the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface since that period of that year.

Victory also means the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one different events.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my both daughters at once, so to win a trophy is especially meaningful," said tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I got when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had failed in his past six finals, including in Halle earlier this year.

His retrieving approach and frequent reactions on court had prompted some to question if his capacity to play at the highest level was over.

Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and perform assertively, reinforced by an enhanced serving game.

The champion fought back from a deficit in the first set against the difficult Moutet, taking 4 of the last five points to gain the advantage.

The pair traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, striving for his initial ATP Tour title, gained dominance to force a final set.

Moutet saved four early-game break points in a competitive final set before the Russian won the break to that score to secure the win.

Fittingly, the winner earned the win with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to manage a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
